Description: Help make someone’s life happier and just a little bit easier. Become a Friendly Visitor to a homebound senior through WEME Mainstream Nutrition and Health Center, a meals-on-wheels agency delivering warm, nutritious meals to approximately 500 frail homebound elderly on the Upper West Side of Manhattan. Our mission is to enhance the quality of life of our homebound seniors and to help them to remain in their apartments rather than move into institutional settings. All of our seniors live on the Upper West Side. All it takes is about two hours a week. We generally ask for a minimum commitment of 6 months. Volunteers offer companionship and generally assist with practical tasks such as reading to the visually impaired; escorting a senior outside; errands and light shopping; teaching basic computer skills; and help with sorting and organizing papers. THIS IS OUR GREATEST NEED: WE ARE LOOKING FOR A SMOKER, OR SOMEONE VERY COMFORTALBE WITH CIGARETTE SMOKE, TO HELP WITH THE FOLLOWING SITUATION: Female client, in the West 90’s, is looking for a volunteer (female preferred but male volunteer is fine too) to spend time with her in conversation and companionship; her husband, who is her only caregiver, is looking for someone to visit with his wife, in order that he be able to have some time to take a break and leave the house; the client had been a textile designer and taught textile design at FIT; she likes to talk about life in New York, animals, travel; client is wheel chair bound so the volunteer may need to move the wheelchair around in the apartment slightly. YOU WOULD BE DOING A WONDERFUL SERVICE IF YOU CAN POSSIBLY HELP. We hope to have other seniors waiting for a volunteer. If working with seniors is something that you have been thinking of doing, why not this fall! Please contact Beth Mandelbaum, WEME's Coordinator of Volunteers, at (212) 874-3750, ext. 16, or by e-mail (this works best):
